Straight answers
How is this free? Here’s exactly how.
No fine-print surprises. Under Australian law, an at-fault driver (in practice, their insurer) must compensate you for the loss of use of your car. We provide the replacement vehicle up front and recover our hire charges from them afterwards.
We believe you should know your side of the deal before you sign anything — not after.
What you'll never pay
The hire charges, delivery, or an admin fee. If recovery takes months, that's our problem — not yours. We pursue the at-fault insurer, not you, provided you've been truthful and met your side of the agreement.
What we ask of you
Be accurate about the accident, share the at-fault driver's details, keep us posted on your repair, and reasonably assist recovery (e.g. a statement if needed). It's all in a plain-English hire agreement.
What you do pay
Normal running costs, exactly as you would in your own car: fuel or charging, tolls, parking and any traffic fines during the hire.
Like-for-like fleet
A car that matches yours — not a downgrade.
Drive an SUV? You get an SUV. Tradie with a ute? You get a ute. Your entitlement is to a vehicle equivalent to your own, and we hold you to nothing less.

Why not just use your insurer, or rent one?
You can — here’s the honest comparison so you can decide.
| Feature | NxtCar | Your insurer’s loan car | Paying for a rental |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost to you | $0 out of pocket* | Often no hire car at all, or tight daily caps | $60–$150+ per day, plus bond |
| Vehicle standard | Like-for-like with your car | Usually a small base-model, if any | Pay more for anything comparable |
| Delivery | Delivered to your door, often same day | Depends on your policy and queue | Counter pick-up, queues, paperwork |
| Duration | For the reasonable repair or settlement period | Often capped at 14–21 days | As long as you keep paying |
| Who chases the insurer | We do — recovery is our job | You, via your claim | You, if you seek reimbursement |
Comparison is general in nature and based on typical Australian comprehensive policies and retail rental pricing as at 2026. Check your own policy — some include generous hire-car benefits.

Questions, answered honestly
The things everyone asks first.
Is it really free? What's the catch?
When you're not at fault, Australian law entitles you to be put back in the position you were in before the accident — including a replacement vehicle. We provide the car and recover the hire charges from the at-fault party's insurer, so there's nothing for you to pay for the hire itself. You cover normal running costs (fuel, tolls, any fines), and you agree to reasonably assist our recovery — for example by providing accident details or a statement. That's the whole arrangement, and it's set out plainly in your hire agreement before you sign.
How fast can I get a car in Melbourne?
Most eligible drivers in greater Melbourne have a vehicle delivered the same day, often within hours of approval. We deliver to your home, workplace or repairer.
What if my car is a write-off?
You can generally keep the replacement vehicle for a reasonable period until you receive the settlement for your written-off car, so you're never left stranded while payments are sorted out.
Do I need to be comprehensively insured?
No. Your entitlement comes from not being at fault, not from your insurance. We help third-party-insured and uninsured not-at-fault drivers too.
